Stellantis just made a move that no one really had on their 2026 bingo card. As The Drive first reported, the company is discontinuing its traditional plug-in hybrid offering in North America starting with the 2026 model year. This timing seems particularly bold since the federal Clean Vehicle Tax Credit was effectively closed to most buyers last fall and many of us assumed that plug-in hybrids would become the “safe” electrified choice as the market recalibrated. Instead, Stellantis is retreating from the very vehicles that helped it bring real PHEV volume to market in the US

The victims were three well-known nameplates: the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Stellantis says the decision is driven by changing customer demand and the company plans to focus on more competitive electrified options, particularly conventional hybrid and extended-range vehicles. That explanation may make sense on paper, but it’s still a surprise considering how visible the 4xe badge has been for Jeep in recent years, especially in markets where commuters liked the idea of electric mileage during the week and gas backup for road trips.

There are also some real-world uncertainties surrounding the rollout. Even though Stellantis says there are no 2026 plug-in hybrid models, some 2026 Pacifica Hybrids have already shown up at dealers, suggesting a short production run fell through before the program was canceled. Add to that the fact that Jeep only introduced a redesigned Grand Cherokee in October, with the 4xe still included, and you get the feeling that this plan changed quickly behind the scenes. For buyers, this typically raises the same questions: What happens to availability, future support, and long-term product planning when a strategy changes so quickly?

The interesting thing is that Stellantis is not giving up on electrification, but is turning to a different variant. Jeep and Ram are launching range extender plug-in hybrids in which the gasoline engine acts as a generator while electric motors provide propulsion. This configuration is planned for vehicles such as the 2027 Grand Wagoneer and the Ram 1500 REV. Meanwhile, the Jeep Cherokee will be launched as a hybrid-only model in 2026, and the Dodge Hornet PHEV will no longer be launched in 2026. If Stellantis can make the range extender approach seamless and priced appropriately, it could appeal to buyers who want to drive electric cars with confidence. The bigger question is whether customers who have already embraced 4xe-style plug-in hybrids will follow Stellantis into this next chapter or shop elsewhere.
