Hyundai’s Santa Cruz has always been the odd pickup truck for people who wanted a bed without having to live with the vibe of a full-size truck, but it sounds like the experiment may be ending sooner than expected. According to a new industry report, Hyundai plans to phase out the compact Santa Cruz after a single generation, with production now set to end earlier than the previously published schedule of the second quarter of 2027.

The reason is pretty simple: the numbers weren’t exactly kind. The Ford Maverick is reportedly running away in the compact truck segment and the Santa Cruz is stuck with slow turns on dealer lots and high inventory levels. The report also suggests that Hyundai has already told its suppliers that it plans to roughly halve production in Santa Cruz in the first quarter of 2026 while freeing up capacity at its Montgomery, Alabama, plant to build more of the Tucson, which is Hyundai’s volume hero in the United States

What makes this more than a simple cancellation story is what Hyundai wants to do next. The same report indicates that production of a midsize pickup truck is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2029, and it would be a very different kind of truck. Instead of the crossover-style unibody approach of the Santa Cruz, Hyundai is said to be switching to a rugged body-on-frame arrangement aimed squarely at the heart of the segment where the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado dominate.

If the plan works, it will be a classic shift from niche to mainstream. Santa Cruz owners and fans will hate to get rid of it because there’s nothing like it, but a true midsize truck gives Hyundai a larger runway for towing, off-road credibility and the kind of spec sheet buyers expect when they walk into a truck lot. The real question is whether Hyundai can maintain its comfort and tech personality while building something that feels sturdy enough to steal away buyers from the usual midsize favorites.
