Jaguar is trying to rewrite its own history in the most dramatic way possible. The plan is to go beyond the familiar “British alternative to the Germans” and aim much higher, with a rebrand that positions Jaguar closer to Bentley than BMW. This also means a clear break with combustion engines, because the next chapter should be fully electric. The first production model for this new era was expected earlier, but the debut was pushed back to later this year, leaving everyone from fans to retailers waiting for real details.

It is precisely this waiting that embarrasses some traders. In a comment shared anonymously with a German office, a Jaguar retail representative put it bluntly that there is currently no clear business case for the brand. Dealers may have expressed their intention to stay with Jaguar, but some appear to be holding out on their final commitment until they understand the strategy, product and associated support structure. It’s the kind of hesitation you hear when a brand changes not just the model but its entire reason for being.

However, not everyone presses the panic button. Dealer leadership in Germany saw the reset as an opportunity, with the important caveat that the market size and customer profile are still unknown. Another retailer praised the upcoming mix of brand, design and technology, but still came back to the same big question: Who exactly is the new Jaguar buyer? This is a valid concern when a brand is aiming for a higher level, because aspirational positioning only works if the product and ownership experience feel undeniably premium.

One of the more interesting topics of discussion is the idea that Jaguar could rely on leasing rather than traditional sales for its new electric grand tourer. The rationale described revolves around controlling the used car pipeline and protecting residual values, which is very important if Jaguar truly wants to be treated like a super-luxury nameplate. Retailers also warned that overproduction was a mistake because too large quantities could dilute the exclusivity that brands want to build over years.

If this strategy holds, Jaguar’s volume expectations will no longer be comparable to those of the past. Dealers named in the report say the new plan calls for around 10,000 units per year, a stark contrast to Jaguar’s peak of 181,500 sales in 2018. Training for retailers is expected to begin this month, order books may open in March or April and prices are expected to start at at least $130,000. The clearest takeaway for now is that Jaguar is betting on scarcity, electric vehicle performance and a sharpened luxury identity, but has yet to convince the people selling the cars that the gamble is working.
