As you know, the Black Badge label is the epitome of Rolls-Royce’s most fundamental expressions and capabilities. When appropriately applied to a Ghost, Phantom, Cullinan or the all-electric Specter, the impression rises to the highest level of bespoke design techniques, technical enhancements and exquisite materials such as Black Badge Technical Carbon.
According to Rolls-Royce, Black Badge is the company’s formidable alter ego and was designed specifically for customers who fearlessly reject convention. Still, some media guests and I had no idea that the PR team would allow us to take a squadron of six Black Badges to a closed course outside of Las Vegas to recreate typhoons in the desert, using the vehicles’ extreme power and our own drifting skills. Additionally, we drove off-road to get to the lake bottom without any concerns. The experience was amazing!
To explore the vast, barren land, my driving partner Ken Panton and I chose a Black Badge Cullinan Series II, beautifully designed with Morganite paint, a unique Black Badge body and a beautiful Black and Grace White interior. Output from the 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine increased to 600 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The Cullinan features Rolls-Royce four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering to efficiently maneuver the stately SUV and its upgraded Black Badge 23-inch wheels. But when I discovered the “OFF-ROAD + DSC OFF” mode, it was time to put the big car into a spin and ceremoniously produce land typhoons as it drifted through the smoke screen. After that, all I could think about was how Rolls-Royce would detail these bad boys.
In the refined interior of the $553,850 Cullinan, enthusiasts will find a carbon fiber finish that breathes life into the vehicle, while the Starlight headliner shines throughout. Upgraded basic features include a watch case with a miniature Black Badge Spirit of Ecstasy ornament, new Duality Twill seats with 2.2 million stitches and up to 11 miles of thread, and an impressive custom 18-speaker audio system.
Absolutely stunning, there’s nothing subtle about a Rolls-Royce. And now the Black Badge moniker upgrades every model with unique wheels, firmer suspension, quicker steering response and increased performance. The range originally introduced for Wraith and Ghost has been expanded for the sought-after brand. Note that a Black Badge is not always black and a Phantom will never be designed as a Black Badge as it is the halo and no additional extensions are required.
At the other end of the spectrum, even the $563,950 Black Badge Specter and its electric steeds performed miraculously. A ghost is defined as a ghost, phantom or apparition. It moves in silence and is free from reality. The Black Badge Specter is Rolls-Royce’s most powerful model, effortlessly delivering 659 hp and 792 lb-ft of torque. The supremely sporty, bespoke successor to the EV luxury throne is beyond beautiful and boasts compelling capabilities that elevate a 21st century driving experience. On set, the Black Badge Specter’s illuminated Pantheon grille glowed brilliantly across the open area as it accelerated at top speed. Don’t get me wrong, the uneven and dirty atmosphere is not an environment that wealthy owners would put their Rolls-Royces through, but it’s cool to know what the hand-built British machines can do.
Goodwood’s ornate collection of Rolls-Royce Black Badges accounts for about 20% of the company’s sales. Therefore, the Rolls-Royce customer does not view money as an object and expects limitless possibilities to solve his desires. I can’t wait for the next Black Badge adventure.
