Volkswagen’s modern microbus revival is experiencing an unexpected boost in speed in the USA. After finally arriving here for the 2025 model year, the ID.Buzz is now set to skip the 2026 model year entirely. That’s a pretty abrupt turnaround for a vehicle that’s caused quite a stir visually alone, but Volkswagen says it’s more of a strategic pause than a cancellation.

The company’s message is essentially: Don’t panic, it’ll be back. Volkswagen leadership has indicated that the brand wants to better manage its inventory by relying on remaining 2025 production to keep dealers supplied until the middle of next year, then moving to a 2027 model that is expected to launch sometime in 2026. In other words, there will be a gap in the product range, but not a complete standstill.

Nevertheless, it is not difficult to understand why this pause occurs. The ID.Buzz has struggled to translate its retro charm into real volume, and the broader electric vehicle market in the U.S. has cooled compared to the hype cycle of a few years ago. When a niche electric vehicle stays on the market for far too long, automakers tend to hit the reset button, especially when price and real-world usability conflict with buyers’ expectations.

This usability conversation is always about scope. When we tested the ID.Buzz, we constantly received comments that this vehicle should have had a range extender or at least a much longer range, which is an unfortunate disadvantage for many potential buyers, even though they love the design and everything else it brings. With an EPA estimate in the low-to-mid 200 mph zone depending on configuration and a starting price of over $60,000, many buyers admire it and then hesitate as they imagine road trips, loss of range in cold weather, or just the daily mental calculation of charging.

If Volkswagen wants the ID.Buzz to come back stronger in 2027, the strategy is obvious: more range, a more affordable pricing structure and perhaps even a rethink of features and packaging to broaden its appeal beyond early adopters. The ID.Buzz has the personality and presence to be a hit, it just needs the kind of practical EV specs that match the emotions it inspires the moment you see it.
